Last gasp win for the Bwl
Ynysybwl came away from a sun drenched Rhydyfelin with a win from the last kick of the game, to deny the home side what they thought was an injury time winning score of their own.
This was a lively affair from the kick off, played in perfect conditions, with the result in doubt right up until the final whistle.
The home side soon had the visitors under pressure. And from a penalty deep in the Bwl 22 Rhydyfelin got the first try of the afternoon following a late tackle.
The Bwl had their hosts under pressure straight from the restart. They had Rhydyfelin penned in their own territory for a lengthy period. But the Bwl failed to turn their territorial advantage and abundance of possession into points. Several penalty kicks also surprisingly went astray given the conditions.
The Bwl eventually levelled the scoring with an opportunist try. A strong tackler in the centre by Sean Ireland won the ball for the visitors. The chip ahead was gathered by the home defence but their clearance kick was charged down. Jonathan Gough won the scramble for the touchdown.
The Bwl forwards had the upperhand and Rhydyfelin were finding themselves under cosh with poor play at the restarts. The Bwl took the lead deep inside the first half. With the Bwl 5 metres from the Rhydyfelin line a deliberate infringement from the home side was penalised with a yellow card. The Bwl opted to kick for a line out and a drive from the throw in secured a try for Philip Hammond.
Within a few minutes the scorer himself was yellow carded for a high tackle. Another missed penalty attempt for the home side signalled the end of the half.
Half time: Rhydyfelin 5 Ynysybwl 10
The Bwl were on the ascendancy from the start of the second half, soon extending their lead. Rhydyfelin failed to halt drives from the Bwl forwards and replacement Rhys Lloyd was driven over. Nathan Ellis’ conversion was the first successful kick at goal of the game.
To their credit a determined Rhydyfelin soon got back into the game, their backs looking very sharp and threatening. Strong running had got the home side deep into Bwl territory and after several phases of play broke through the Bwl defence for their second try of the afternoon.
Rhydyfelin were now having their best spell of the game and had the Bwl penned in their own half. The Bwl were caught offside in the middle of the field deep in their own 22. The quickly taken penalty gained a deserved try for the home side, the conversion levelled the score with 15 minutes of normal playing time remaining.
Soon after the restart Rhydyfelin found themselves down to 14, a red card shown by the referee for illegal use of the boot at a ruck. Nathan Ellis slotted over the penalty to restore the Bwl lead.
Frustratingly for the Bwl the game was now played out with passive scrums which suited the home side. The Bwl however had Rhydyfelin under pressure and though they had scored from another charged down kick. But this time the referee adjudged other wise.
An injury to Bwl full back Jamie Thomas meant the game was heading for a few minutes of injury time. The sharp Rhydyfelin backs looked to run their side out of trouble at every opportunity and as the game went into injury time a slick handling move paid dividends. They moved the ball wide, creating an overlap for a try in the corner, to edge ahead.
The home supporters jubilation at what they thought would be a match winning score was however short lived.
Once again Rhydyfelin failed to secure the ball from the restart. The Bwl moved the ball hoping to make their player advantage tell. And in front of the home posts an infringement gave Nathan Ellis a simple penalty attempt. His successful kick put the Bwl back in front and signalled the end of the game.
