Bwl on top in 10 try thriller

Ynysybwl were the winners against a young, determined Garndiffaith who played their part in an entertaining Division 2 East encounter on Saturday.
The ‘Garn’ were making a return to the Recreation ground after a spell of 9 seasons and their young side soon found themselves under pressure. Bwl centre, Sean Ireland, cleverly slipped through the visitors defence line but found no support for his effort.
Any thoughts of an easy stroll for the Bwl were soon dispelled as, against the run of play, it was the visitors who opened the scoring following a fine run by wing Geraint Jones. James Davies converted.
The Bwl were soon on he score-sheet themselves. Good handling found Rhys Davies across from his own wing position. He still had a lot to do to work his way over for his try. Richard Tibbs converted.
A touchline penalty restored the visitors lead before the Bwl edged ahead. They had won the ball from the restart courtesy of the impressive No. 8, Alun Thomas. After a number of forward drives for the line it was hooker Philip Hammond who burst over. Several penalty attempts were missed by both sides before the visitors were back in front. A loose ball was picked up by the plucky Geraint Jones who raced over for a try under the posts which was easily converted.
Alun Thomas has fitted in well at No. 8 to an impressive young back-row forward line up for the Bwl. Good handling and support play from the No. 8 and flanker Ricky Thomas provided with Sean Ireland with a deserved try.
The score of the afternoon ensured the Bwl a bonus point. The Garndiffaith forwards were under all sorts of pressure and the Bwl sole the ball off their scrum put in on half way. A burst upfield from captain Nathan Ellis saw him chip the ball over the last line of defence to gather the ball and touch-down under the posts. His added conversion to a sublime score was the last points of the half.

Half time: Ynysybwl 24 Garndiffaith 17

A somewhat fortuitous score early into the second half extended the Bwl lead. Lewis Ryan gathered a high ball and, despite the call from the referee the ball had gone back as he gathered the ball, several Garn players waited for a knock-on award. The Bwl wing burst upfield for a try which Ellis converted.
A penalty midway through the second half brought the score back to 31 – 20. As the game wore on the Bwl forwards began to dominate their opponents. A Garn scrum, 5 metres from their own line, was turned by the Bwl pack. A Bwl drive from their put in at the restart was illegally collapsed by the visitors, referee Gareth Saunders no hesitation awarding a penalty try. Ellis converted.
To their credit the visitors never gave up the cause and with 10 minutes of normal time remaining missed a glaring opportunity to score, having secured an overlap the ball failed to go to hand 5 metres from the Bwl line.
But their endeavours were rewarded with a simple try for scrum half Rhodri Jones, the conversion reducing the points deficit to 11.
As the game moved into injury time the Bwl ensured there was no prospect of a come-back for the visitors. Elis added a penalty before securing his second converted try of the afternoon as, seeing a gap in the visitors defence, he burst up the try line for a cheeky score.
This 48 – 27 win sees the Bwl having won their opening 3 league games of the season, their best start since being involved at Division 2 level.
The visitors will feel disappointed they failed to secure a fourth try bonus point of their own. But this impressive young side will surely be reaping rewards for their scoring very soon.
