Turner boot fails to save Cynon

On the back of 2 consecutive league defeats Ynysybwl travelled the short distance to Y Parc for what is always a tough encounter against local rivals Abercynon.
In ideal conditions the game got off to a cracking pace. The Bwl came close to opening the scoring when captain Nathan Ellis’ quick thinking allowed him to open up a gap in the Abercynon defence from a penalty award. His effort was thwarted though close to the home line.
A Matthew Turner penalty opened the scoring for Abercynon, with an immediate response from the Bwl. Having won the ball from their hosts from the restart, Richard Tibbs at full back entered the Bwl back line and some weak defending allowed him to cross for a try.
After a spell of Bwl pressure, from which no points were secured, a second Turner penalty edged the home side in front. The Abercynon forwards were by now causing their counterparts problems, the Bwl unable to command scrums or line-outs. Abercynon extended their lead in somewhat fortunate manner. The Bwl defence failed to gather a poor drop goal; attempt and Turner pounced on the loose ball for a simple touch down which he converted.
Ceri Cummins was making a return to the Bwl line up to bolster their back line and added a penalty for the visitors before a huge penalty attempt from inside his own half added Turner’s and his sides points tally.

Half time: Abercynon 16 Ynysybwl 8

Early in the second half another Turner long range penalty put Abercynon in a seemingly secure 19 – 8 lead. And the Bwl cause appeared to become the more difficult 10 minutes into the half when James Read was shown a yellow card.
Abercynon however failed to make full use of their one man advantage and as the game wore on the Bwl forwards began to take the upper-hand. Soon after the Bwl were restored to 15, Sean Ireland stormed through the home defence for a try.
As they chased the game, the Bwl had their hosts penned in their own 22. And from a deliberate infringement Abercynon found themselves temporarily down to 14. The Bwl opted for a scrimmage and outside-half James Read snook over for a try. Ceri Cummins converted to give the Bwl the slenderest of leads.
As the match entered the final stages both sets of supporters were on edge as the game could go either way. The Bwl were penalised on half way and their dispute of the refereeing decision gave Turner a penalty attempt on the Bwl 10 metre line. His successful kick swung the advantage back to the home side.
The Bwl responded to once again punish some poor defending by the home side. A chip ahead to the corner of the field was gathered by the speedy Gareth King for the Bwl’s 4th try and thereby securing the visitors a bonus point.
As the game went deep into injury time Cummins slotted over a penalty to seal Abercynon’s fate.
