Ynysybwl defeated SWALEC league Division 1 opponents Beddau in this Worthington Mid District Cup first round fixture to add to Beddau’s woeful start to the season.
The midweek tie gave the opportunity to both sides to experiment with their line ups, and a growing injury list paid a big part in the visitor’s selection.
In the first half both sides failed to get into any sort of rhythm, the game littered with refereeing stoppages. The Bwl, playing with the elements of the Cae Staff field in their favour, opened the scoring. Flanker James Dunne secured turnover ball deep in his own territory and burst up the touchline to feed Lewis Ryan to cross for a try in the corner.
Beddau’s opening score was courtesy of a penalty close to their hosts posts. Following a period of Bwl pressure, outside half Richard Lloyd added a drop goal before Beddau completed the first half scoring with their second successful penalty of the game.

The Bwl extended their lead early in the second half. A forward drive was rewarded with a try for prop Dafydd Davies. Nathan Ellis converted. And Ellis added a penalty to give the home side a two score advantage.
There was more fluency about the game in the second period and the visitors played some exciting rugby as they chased the game. The Bwl defence was quite resolute until late into the game the visitors found a break through for a converted try.
The score gave the visiting supporters a glimmer of hope, albeit short lived. A Bwl attack ended with an opportunist try for Lewis Ryan. As the Beddau defence failed to gather the winger’s kick ahead he grounded for his second try of the evening to secure the tie.
This win was the tonic the Bwl needed following the last gasp defeat in the league the previous Saturday.
